LC #28: Man of Luck

Posted by Erik On June - 18 - 2009

lostchatter_itunesJack's the "man of science." Locke's the "man of faith." This week, we take a look at everyone's favorite "man of luck," Hurley.

Several characters on the show have talked about "making your own fate" and "choosing your destiny." Is Hurley able to take it so far as to actually affect the world around him through his subconscious thoughts? For all the talk about fate, we wonder if Hurley may be one of the most pivotal characters in the series.

New iPhone/Touch theme; Twitter automation

iPhones & iPod Touches

We've just installed a new theme/plugin for our iPhone and iPod Touch users. Features include...

  • Drop-down excerpts on the main page
  • A search feature
  • Category links
  • Comments

Twitter

We've also installed a plugin that will automate blog postings to the RandomChatter Twitter account. If you're not already following us on Twitter, check us out at http://twitter.com/randomchatter.

Email Subscriptions

Did you know you can subscribe to us via email? Once a day, you'll get all of our posts — including podcasts (minus the MP3's) — sent directly to your mailbox. Just use the "Subscribe for Email Feed" on the right.

Donations

Finally, by reader request, we've posted a Paypal Donations button. I'm surprised people have requested this, and I'm flattered. Truth is, we do have expenses associated with both the website and all of our various podcasts, and right now I'm paying them out of my own (tiny) pockets. Any help our listeners would like to provide would be greatly appreciated. Paypal will allow you to use a credit/debit card instead of a Paypal payment if you wish. If we can bring in enough through donations, we'd like to start running contests with prizes. So if you enjoy our shows, please consider helping us out. Thanks!

Welcome to the new site!

Posted by Erik On February - 10 - 2009

rcWe've launched a new site design!

Instead of a continuous stream of individual blog posts, we're now taking a "magazine" approach. The most recent podcasts will be featured over on the right, and the boxes below will each highlight a different topic.

The site will be similar to the podcast shows in that our focus is not reporting all the latest news — instead, we provide commentary on particular news stories or topics floating around the Internet.

Bear with us, as there are a few tweaks and changes we still need to make. As always, feel free to contact us with any feedback.

Spam (no, not the Monty Python version)

Posted by Erik On February - 5 - 2009

Our forums have been hit with a ton of spam, and I don't mean the Monty Python skits.

I've just cleaned them up and banned a range of IP addresses that seem to be where it's coming from. If anyone discovers I accidentally deleted a real user (I'm almost positive I didn't), let me know.

Site Outage next Wednesday

Posted by Erik On October - 15 - 2008

Just a quick note to let everyone know our ISP is doing server maintenance next Wednesday morning (10/22). The site will be down for about six hours, from approximately 1:00am to 7:00am (Eastern). This will also affect podcast downloads, including those through iTunes. I doubt anyone will notice, but if you're an early riser, now you know.

A Week Off

Posted by Erik On September - 17 - 2008

Sorry about not putting any shows out this week. Ren's been sick, Brian's been sick, and I've been sick. Andrew's got the least-whiny excuse though -- he's been working on his short film, The (Hide and) Seeker! He's wrapped it up (hopefully we'll get a copy of that posted soon), and the rest of us are feeling better, so everything's back to normal now.

Anyway, fear not -- we'll have a quick Righteous Kill review posted in the next day or so, and we'll be back to our regularly scheduled programs this coming week. Look for new RandomChatter and MovieChatter shows Monday, and expect the new TechChatter show Tuesday. And don't forget -- LostChatter starts up again in a few weeks!

Post Update

Posted by Erik On September - 10 - 2008

To those who were requesting the list for the MC_019: Top 5 Thematic Sci-Fi Films show, I've added a list of IMDB and Netflix links to the show notes. Some of the movies are available as part of Netflix's "Play Now" selection. Enjoy!

Shows are back online

Posted by Erik On July - 22 - 2008

Episode #15 of RandomChatter and Episode #14 of MovieChatter are now back online. The links in the posts below are updated, and the RSS and iTunes feeds have the correct files. Thanks for your patience.

No iPod? No Problem!

Posted by Erik On July - 18 - 2008

iTunes may be the most popular and the easiest way to automatically get podcasts, but it's not the only way. There's apparently still a big misconception about what a podcast is. Even the name itself is a misnomer; a "podcast" isn't inherently related to an iPod in any way. Some people still don't realize that our shows are merely MP3 files, just like most of their music files.

For those who don't (or won't) use iTunes, I've included new information on the left side of the site. You can now...

  • Listen to our shows in your browser
  • Get our RSS feeds to use in other programs
  • Read a more detailed explanation of how to get podcasts without iTunes or an iPod

We’re now iPhone optimized!

Posted by Erik On July - 15 - 2008

If you're visiting our site on an iPhone, you'll now get a site theme optimized for iPhone viewing. It strips out the sidebar and header links providing a page you can easily view without zooming. Yes, even when the phone is vertical.

We don't have a forums skin specially designed for the iPhone, but you'll notice that if you turn your phone into landscape (horizontal) mode, reading our forums can easily be done without zooming.
