Yeah, I'd heard about that. Never checked out his stuff. I'd love to hear how it worked out for him.

It's sad, but this type of thing won't ever be accepted until it's done by someone much larger and more mainstream (Spielberg, Cameron... heck, even Ratner). Look at the music industry -- people like Coulton have a big following in the geek crowd, but it's not until someone like Nine Inch Nails or... crap, my memory's not working today -- was it Coldplay? Anyway, it's not until someone like that steps out on the ledge and takes a risk that the industry starts to seriously consider changing their paradigm.

And, of course, it's very different in the music industry. You can self-produce much easier. Movies are a billion times more complicated.

Sorry... I tend to ramble when I'm tired.

Mark Cuban owns HDNet and Landmark theaters, and he is also producing movies. His studio model is to put movies on HDNet, on DVD, and in theaters simultaneously. He also sells the DVD in the lobby of the theater so if you liked it you can buy it as a souvenir on the way out.

Not sure how well that's working out for him. The rest of the studio system hates hates hates it.
