UPDATE: This has been debunked. See below.
/Film says Production Weekly is reporting that Judd Apatow is producing the upcoming Ghostbusters 3 film. This has been rumored for a while, but now it's apparently official.
Dan Akroyd recently said production will begin this fall, the film will contain the original Ghostbusters characters in cameo roles, the movie will focus on a new generation of Ghostbusters, and the film is being written by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Greg Stupnitsky.
So what do you think? Is this the right way to go?
Personally, given all the recent remakes & sequels that have sucked, I'm pretty psyched about this. Apatow understands comedy in a way few other directors/producers do these days, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather see handling this film. Yes, that includes Kevin Smith.
Who will star? Apatow seems to have his own "brat pack" — Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, and Bill Hader (and maybe a few others). All of these have been rumored to be associated with Ghostbusters 3 at one time or another (at least, to my recollection), though officially none of them have been signed.
What do you think? I think Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen could easily pull this movie off as its two main characters. I think it's time for Rudd to step up and take the lead like he did with Role Models. I'd love to see Segel in this, as he's one of my favorite comedic actors at the moment. Hill and Hader would be decent additions, but I really don't see either of them as one of the leads in this. There are a lot of other actors they could use for this, but I can't think of anyone I'd rather see than Rogen, Rudd, and Segel.
With Apatow running things, maybe there's a chance.

UPDATE:
This has been debunked. As Nathan commented below, JoBlo.com links to an article from the L.A. Times debunking this report.
This is the hard part about keeping up with news like this. Rumors abound, of course, but every now and then you get something that's actually "reported," coming from an otherwise-reliable source. And people like me have no way of confirming every single source from every single article, so we pass that info along to our readers, trusting that our source has confirmed things with their sources. To be fair, we did use words like "apparently," and we did claim that Production Weekly reported the information. We didn't state it as fact — only that we have been told as such.
[sigh] This is sad news. Apatow doing Ghostbusters would be awesome. Oh well.
